DM Map Annotator is a free, browser-based map annotation tool built for tabletop roleplaying games  and anyone else who thinks visually about their worlds.

Upload any image as your base map, then layer it with pins, markers, and notes to track the moving parts of your campaign: where the troops are marching, which quests are active, what the party doesn't know yet. Everything lives on togglable layers, so you can keep your DM view separate from what you'd show your players.

Features

  • Upload any image as a map (PNG, JPG, WEBP)
  • 9 marker types — locations, troops, NPCs, quests, dungeons, and more
  • Layered annotations with per-layer visibility toggle
  • Fog of war — paint and erase fog to build player-friendly exports
  • Custom marker colors
  • Save your project as JSON and reload it next session
  • Export the annotated map as a PNG

Not just for DMs. If you're a writer building a fantasy world, a GM running a mystery campaign, or just someone who thinks better with a map in front of them this tool works for any image and any kind of annotation.

Runs entirely in your browser. No accounts required, no server, no data leaves your machine.

The map shown in screenshots was made with https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/ (great tool, check it out if you haven't), while Azgaar's Generator has annotation capabilities, I needed something simpler for my own maps, it's also compatible with any kind of image so it should be a little more versatile.
